In ‘Vikram’, produced by Kamal Haasan and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, a massive drug cartel and illegal narcotics trade formed the central theme of the story. The same director’s film ‘Leo’ also featured international crime networks and drug syndicates as important parts of the narrative.
In Telugu cinema, investigative thrillers like ‘HIT: The First Case’ and ‘HIT: The Second Case’ showcased elements related to drug mafias and criminal networks. Similarly, films like ‘Pushpa’ and ‘Pushpa 2’, although primarily based on red sandalwood smuggling, portrayed how international smuggling networks operate. Malayalam films like ‘Marco’ have also explored themes involving crime syndicates and violent gangs. As a result, crime thrillers and stories revolving around drug mafias have gained significant popularity among viewers.
One of the upcoming films following this trend is ‘Dharmasthala Niyojakavargam’. Starring Nataraj, son of senior actor Satyaprakash, who is known for his villain roles in Telugu and Kannada cinema, the film focuses on issues such as drug mafia networks, political corruption, and the future of youth. The makers have stated that the movie will showcase the dangers caused by narcotics in society through a commercial narrative while also delivering a strong social message.
The film is directed by Jai Gnana Prabha Thota and produced under the banner of Merum Bhaskar Moving Dreams India Private Limited. Music is composed by Mahaveer Yelender, while renowned lyricist Chandrabose has penned the songs. The tracks sung by popular singer Sunitha are expected to be a special attraction of the film. Cinematography is handled by Venkat Hanuma, while popular choreographer Shrasthi Varma has choreographed the songs. Actors including Suman, Sai Kumar, Varun Sandesh, Vithika Sheru, Rajeev Kanakala, Raja Ravindra, Prabhakar, Shafi, and Prithviraj are playing key roles.
Along with this, several other projects based on drug syndicates, narcotics officers, and international drug networks are also in development across different Indian film industries. However, the filmmakers have not yet officially revealed the complete details of those projects.
According to film analysts, movies that highlight the harmful consequences of drugs without glorifying them can create a positive impact on society. Films that aim to increase awareness among youth, warn them against drug addiction, and showcase the fight against drug mafias are not only providing entertainment but also fulfilling a social responsibility.
