India's rural employment landscape entered a new phase with the implementation of the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Act. From July 1, 2026, the new legislation officially replaced the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) continues to be one of India's most significant rural welfare programmes. Designed to provide wage employment to rural households, the scheme not only creates livelihood opportunities but also supports the development of long-term community assets such as water conservation structures, village roads, land improvement works, and plantation projects.
The Union Government regularly reviews the implementation of the programme across states, assessing factors such as the number of workdays generated, the pace of project execution, and overall participation by rural workers.
According to the latest performance data covering the last four months, Andhra Pradesh has emerged as the leading state in generating the highest number of employment workdays under the scheme. The state's consistent implementation of rural development projects has helped create large-scale employment opportunities while improving village infrastructure.
Officials attribute the achievement to the effective execution of works related to water conservation, pond restoration, irrigation channels, plantation drives, and other public utility projects. Better planning and timely implementation have also contributed to higher worker participation across rural areas.
The achievement reflects the important role the employment guarantee programme continues to play in strengthening rural livelihoods while creating durable community assets. Andhra Pradesh's performance during the recent review period highlights its focus on ensuring both employment generation and sustainable rural development.
