Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Long-Awaited India Return Takes an Unexpected Turn

For Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the opportunity to wear India’s colours again arrived sooner than expected, although the comeback did not unfold as he or his supporters might have hoped. The veteran fast bowler was recalled for the fifth T20I against the West Indies in Bengaluru after Arshdeep Singh suffered a shoulder injury, bringing an end to a wait of nearly four years for another appearance in India’s T20I playing XI.

Bhuvneshwar’s selection was initially intended to provide cover for Arshdeep, whose availability depended on his recovery from the injury sustained during the fourth T20I in Hyderabad. The decision subsequently gave the experienced seamer a place in the starting XI for the series finale at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, a venue that holds particular significance in his cricketing journey.

The 36-year-old last represented India in a T20I in November 2022. His return came after 3 years and 340 days, during which India played 106 T20 internationals without him. For a bowler who once formed a central part of India’s limited-overs attack, the extended absence represented a major change in his international career.

His recall was not simply a consequence of an injury replacement. Bhuvneshwar had already earned selection for India’s upcoming T20I series against New Zealand, scheduled to begin on October 22. His performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League had helped strengthen his case, demonstrating that his experience and bowling skills remained valuable in the shortest format.

Bhuvneshwar’s greatest strength has traditionally been his ability to move the new ball, maintain control in the powerplay and use variations when batters look to accelerate. Those qualities are especially relevant in T20 cricket, where a disciplined opening spell can influence the direction of an innings. India’s recent matches against the West Indies had exposed difficulties in controlling high-scoring contests, making an experienced bowler an attractive option for the team management.

India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel had welcomed Bhuvneshwar’s return, highlighting the value of his experience for a relatively young bowling group. Beyond his individual skills, his presence could help younger bowlers make better decisions under pressure, particularly when opponents attack from the beginning.

The Bengaluru fixture, however, was disrupted by rain. Reduced to nine overs per side after a lengthy delay, the match was eventually abandoned when India reached 118 for five in 7.4 overs. The result left the five-match series tied 2-2, denying both teams a decisive finish and preventing Bhuvneshwar from making a full impact with the ball.

The weather robbed his comeback of a proper competitive examination, but it did not diminish the significance of his selection. His inclusion in the New Zealand squad now provides another opportunity to demonstrate that he can contribute at international level. Whether he becomes a regular option will depend on fitness, performance and the team’s evolving bowling requirements.

For Bhuvneshwar, the next challenge is to turn a long-awaited return into a sustained international opportunity. For India, his comeback offers an experienced alternative as the team continues to assess the right balance between established performers and emerging fast bowlers.
